Kylian Mbappe announced as new France captain

Didier Deschamps announced on Tuesday that forward Kylian Mbappe of Paris Saint-Germain will serve as the next captain of the France national team. Deschamps informed the France team of his decision on Monday.

Kylian Mbappe has succeeded the retired Hugo Lloris as France captain, a source close to the team informed AFP.

After losing the World Cup final a month ago, Tottenham goalkeeper Lloris decided to quit his international career.

Lloris, 36, had been skipper for more than a decade.

Deschamps declared Kylian Mbappe as the new captain of France in a statement to Telefoot. The vice-captain is Antoine Griezmann.

"Kylian checks all the boxes to be given this duty. By playing a crucial role both on and off the field."

Deschamps and Mbappe reportedly spoke on Monday at Clairefontaine, the training facility for the French national team. He also had a conversation with Griezmann, the other contender for the armband. On Monday night, after making up his mind, the head coach broke the news to his team.

Following in the footsteps of Lloris, who held the armband for 14 years from 2008 to 2022, Mbappe will become one of the youngest captains of France in history.

In his Monday news conference, Deschamps stated that "legitimacy" was the primary factor in his selection and that "the common interest will prevail." Deschamps continued by stating that he felt Mbappe had improved as a leader since the World Cup.

Mbappe will begin his new era as captain of Les Bleus on Friday against the Netherlands at the Stadium de France in a qualification match for the 2024 European Championship. Mbappe has previously worn the armband for Les Bleus once, midway during the game against Denmark in September. Three days later, they travel to Dublin, Ireland.
